Walk the Downs

The Countryside Centre is an ideal place from which to start your walk and we have a range of walking guides, and maps available in the Countryside Centre Shop.

The Peace Path walk has good views of the Beachy Head Lighthouse, Belle Tout Lighthouse and to all 73 miles of the South Downs Way.

We also have a 3.5 mile walk, viewing a number of archaeological sites and some great views across the downs to Belle Tout, Birling Gap and the sea.

Please help the environment by leaving your car at home.

The 12A bus runs a half-hourly service every day in the summer from the Pier and Arndale Centre in Eastbourne, and Churchill Square in Brighton.

Many of our visitors combine the bus with a walk.

For a great day out why not pack up a picnic and then:
  • Take the Brighton & Hove Coaster bus 12A from Eastbourne Pier or Brighton to Beachy Head Countryside Centre
  • Walk the Seven Sisters to Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters Country Park
  • Return home on Brighton & Hove Coaster bus 12A back to Eastbourne Pier or Brighton.

Flora and fauna on the Downs

The Countryside Centre has a range of books and information sheets on birds, bees, butterflies, animals and plants which inhabit or can be seen on the downs.

Some of the books are for sale, and other for reference purposes only.

The Cecil Bell Butterfly Collection contains a wide range of butterflies and moths, many of which are unfortunately now extinct.
